The fieldwork conducted in World Natural Heritage, Shiretoko, by the laboratory of Associate Professor Ryo Sakurai (RARA Associate Fellow) is featured in the nature information magazine SEEDS, issued by the Shiretoko Nature Foundation. Since 2023, as part of environmental education evaluation research, Assoc. Prof. Sakurai has been taking third-year undergraduate students in his laboratory to Shiretoko to deepen their knowledge of the natural environment of Shiretoko and conduct research on how local residents coexist with wildlife.
In the magazine’s “59th Interview with Shiretoko People” article, Assoc. Prof. Sakurai talks about what has incited him to become a university professor as well as his thoughts and future plans regarding the research on education on wild bears in Shiretoko.
