Professor Kota Suechika (RARA Fellow) has published new research findings on Middle Eastern and Lebanese politics in the English-language journal Third World Quarterly. This paper examines how public support for Hezbollah, a Shiite Islamist organization in Lebanon, changes in response to shifts in the Middle East (i.e. differences in political context), based on the results of a unique survey experiment. By reframing public attitudes toward Hezbollah—which is often perceived as having a fixed support base rooted in “Shiism,” “Iran,” and “Islamism”—as context-dependent and dynamic, the study offers a new perspective on understanding contemporary Middle Eastern politics.

This study is also one of the latest achievements of “Area Studies 2.0,” which connects empirical analyses rooted in specific regional realities to broader methodological, theoretical, and comparative political science issues. Furthermore, it offers insights into the future of the current conflict between the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Hezbollah, as well as the future trajectory of Hezbollah as an organization.
