Professor Kota Suechika (RARA Fellow) has published research papers on Lebanese politics in Nationalism and Ethnic Politics and Ethnopolitics. The first paper analyzes the political discourse of the leadership of Hezbollah, a Shiite Islamist organization in Lebanon, through a quantitative analysis of big data for Arabic-language texts, a unique dataset of its kind. The other paper, meanwhile, analyzes the results of a unique survey experiment to demonstrate that the continued monopolization of power by elite politicians in Lebanon is driven not by top-down mechanisms but by bottom-up mechanisms.
