Professor Satoshi Tanaka (RARA Fellow) co-hosted a workshop titled “Workshop on Visualization for the Digital and Public Humanities (DPH-Vis)” at the IEEE Pacific Visualization Conference 2025, together with Professor Soumya Dutta of Kanpur Institute of Technology (KIT), India. The workshop centered on visualization technologies to support research activities in the humanities field.

The IEEE, headquartered in the United States, is one of the worlds largest international academic associations in the field of information and communications technologies. The Pacific Visualization is one of the three largest IEEE international conferences in the field of visualization and takes place annually mainly in Asia.

With the idea of opening up research that uses visualization as a core technology to promote intuitive understanding of complex things and concepts to the general public, rather than confining it to researchers exclusively, Prof. Tanaka incorporated the word “public” into the workshop name and delivered a keynote speech based on this purport in collaboration with Professor Liang Li of the College of Information Science and Engineering.

The first workshop was a huge success, drawing over 70 participants. It is expected that there will be sequels to the workshop in the years ahead.
