Creating Sustainable Water Environments in Asian Countries Using Technologies for Biological Wastewater Treatment
My main research topics are removal of organic matter, nitrogen, and metals through biological wastewater treatment using microorganisms and aquatic plants such as activated sludge and constructed wetlands. I have collaborated with Universities in Vietnam and India to explore appropriate technologies for local water environment challenges.
Biological wastewater technology offers the advantage of leveraging natural self-purification processes, which reduces the need for chemicals and electricity, simplifies maintenance, and keeps costs low. This makes it particularly valuable for Asian countries experiencing rapid economic development.
To position our university as a key knowledge node in the international network, I aim to continuously build partnerships with Asian countries through academic research and the social implementation of environmental technology.
I will advance the research on Environmental Engineering for Supporting Agriculture, Livestock, and the Fishery Industry in Vietnam with the support of the Asia-Japan Research Institute at Ritsumeikan University (2022-2024). I am in charge of the short-term internship PBL program with the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad, and will thereby aim to foster deeper exchanges. As deputy director of the Lake Biwa Environmental Innovation Center, I will outline a strategic vision for environmental technology to enhance interdisciplinary integrated research.
The success or failure of efforts to address environmental issues in Asia, which is developing after Europe and the US, will impact the future of Latin America and Africa.
Partnerships:
I would like to strengthen our partnerships with Vietnam (Vietnam-Japan University, VJU), India (Indian Institute of Technology, IIT Hyderabad), Indonesia (Bandung Institute of Technology, ITB), and China (Beijing University of Technology, BUT) in the Asian region.
Research collaborations:
When targeting wastewater treatment in Vietnam, India, Indonesia, and China, it is crucial to understand and respect the specific industries and values of each region to develop effective and sustainable technologies.
